Advent Devo | Week Four
As we continue our Advent journey, we reflect on Luke 4, where Jesus begins His public ministry. This chapter reveals powerful contrasts—between temptation and faithfulness, divine mission and human rejection. Through these moments, we see God’s redemptive plan unfolding.
The Temptation of Jesus
Luke 4 opens with Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, being tempted in the wilderness after forty days of fasting. Satan tests Him in three ways:
- Physical Hunger: “Turn this stone to bread.” Jesus replies, “Man shall not live by bread alone” (Deut 8:3).
- Earthly Power: “Worship me, and I will give you the kingdoms of the world.” Jesus declares, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve” (Deut 6:13).
- Testing God’s Protection: “Throw yourself down; angels will save you.” Jesus responds, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test” (Deut 6:16).
These temptations were an attempt to derail Jesus’ mission before it began. Yet, through His reliance on Scripture, Jesus proved His sinlessness and readiness to fulfill His divine calling.
Jesus Begins His Ministry
After overcoming temptation, Jesus begins teaching in Galilee. In Nazareth, His hometown, He reads from Isaiah 61: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to proclaim good news to the poor… to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18-19). Then He boldly declares, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Initially amazed, the people of Nazareth turn hostile when Jesus challenges their expectations, reminding them that God’s grace extends to all people. Their rejection reflects humanity’s struggle to accept a Messiah who did not fit their ideals.
The Purpose of Rejection
Jesus’ rejection was not a failure; it fulfilled prophecy. Isaiah 53:3 describes Him as “despised and rejected by men.” This rejection ultimately led to the cross, where the rejection of Christ became the means of salvation for all.
Application for Today
Luke 4 calls us to examine our own hearts:
- Are we open to Jesus’ teachings, even when they challenge us?
- Do we trust God’s plan, even when it doesn’t align with our expectations?
As we reflect on Jesus’ example—His victory over temptation and steadfastness in the face of rejection—may we draw strength to follow Him faithfully. The Advent season reminds us that rejection and trials are not the end but can lead to deeper faith and hope.
