The Gift of Jesus | Merry Christmas
My wife and I started dating about two weeks before Christmas my senior year in college. It was an unexpected, although not unwanted, development that didn’t leave much time for exchanging gifts before we each returned home for Christmas break, her to Houston and me to Dallas.
I was pleasantly surprised when she called and asked if she could come visit me after Christmas. I counted the days before I would see her again. The anticipation was almost unbearable. She probably brought me a gift, but I don’t remember what it was. It wasn’t what I was waiting for. What I was waiting for was Nicole. She was the real gift.
Reflecting on this makes it easier for me to appreciate the gift that Jesus was to all of us. God had given the world many good gifts since creation, but none as spectacular as himself. He took on flesh and dwelt among us.
I am thankful for the gifts God has given me. My family, my friends, our church, my health, my home, my job. So many things. But what I am most thankful for is the giver of all these gifts, Jesus.
I wish I could say that I feel this way all the time. I don’t. I forget. I get distracted by my desires for the gifts, just like I can focus on what Nicole is buying me for Christmas.
Although distraction is easy, refocusing is just as easy.
I pause.
I take a breath.
And I lift my eyes from the gift to the One giving it.
Jesus, you are the giver of every good gift. Thank you. Help me love You more than the gifts You give.
