Blessed Assurance | Hymn25

1873 | Fanny Crosby

Have you ever wondered if you are secure in your salvation? I confess that many days I wonder if God’s saving power is real in my life. Thankfully our salvation is not dependent on our fickle hearts, but God’s unchanging faithfulness. And we have the promises forever written in the Scriptures and sealed on our hearts:

1 John 1:9 — If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Ephesians 1:13-14 – “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it…”

Titus 3:5-7 – “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

Hebrews 10:22 – Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

In the late 1800s two of the most famous women hymn writers were dear friends and pen pals: Ridley Havergal of England and Frances (Fanny) Crosby of America. Havergal once wrote these lyrics to describe her friend Fanny:

Sweet, blind singer over the sea
Tuneful and jubilant! How can it be,
That the songs gf gladness; which float so far,
As if they fell from the evening star
Are the notes of one who may never see
‘Visible music’ of flower and tree
Oh, her heart can see, her heart can see!
And its sight is strong and swift and free.

Fanny gave us one of the most profound and beautiful songs to proclaim our assurance of salvation and hope in the promises of our God through Jesus Christ.

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.

This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect communion, perfect delight,
visions of rapture now burst on my sight.
Angels descending bring from above
echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

Perfect submission, all is at rest.
I in my Savior am happy and bless’d,
watching and waiting, looking above,
filled with his goodness, lost in his love.

Let me at a throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief;
Kneeling there in deep contrition,
Help my unbelief.

Trusting only in Thy merit,
Would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.

Thou the Spring of all my comfort,
More than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee?
Whom in heav’n but Thee?
