Straight Talk
As the church was just getting started in the first century God told the apostle John to write seven of these churches a short letter. In these special messages God had some important things to commend them for and to challenge them with. This is straight talk from God and is also straight talk to us today.

Loved Bill’s sermon yesterday on the letter to the church of Philadelphia in Rev. 3! And I love the fact the we are a church that is excited about the open doors God has for us and that we are a church that actively pursues those opportunities!
I did have a question about one teensy-weensy thing that was thrown out about v.11 where Jesus says “I am coming quickly”. Bill suggested that “quickly” was not meant to mean “quickly” but rather “unexpectedly”. (Does it undermine a dispensational understanding if Jesus actually meant “quickly,” perhaps?)
So I looked up “quickly” in Strong’s – number 5035 – and
found it 8 times prior to its use in Revelation. I don’t see in any of those places that “unexpectedly” would be a better translation of 5035 than “quickly.” Also, I don’t think in any of those instances did the person hearing the word (The women at the tomb, the slaves in the prodigal son, Timothy) would have understood it more as “unexpectedly” than “quickly.”
So I’m wondering what exegetical basis there is for understanding 5035 as “unexpectedly” rather than “quickly”?
Again, it was a great sermon, and this is a nit-pick that I would say doesn’t effect the overall understanding of the letter to Philadelphia, and I’m very glad to be in a church that pursues open doors.
According to the Wave Study Bible “tachu” can imply “surprise”, but I can’t find that meaning in Vine’s .
