And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.
David is celebrating! In fact, if you read the rest of the passage, his clothes could not even hold in his celebration! He strips down and dances before the ark of the covenant. In that time the ark was where God dwelt with His people. It was a physical place where Moses and the the nation of Israel would meet with God. The ark had just been brought into the holy city and David was so overjoyed to have God there, he had to celebrate! Today, our reality is very different then that of the Israelites. While we don’t have a physical ark for God to dwell in, we do have God’s presence within us. We have the gift of the Holy Spirit, who is with us at all times, offering us the very things David and the nation of Israel wanted. They wanted guidance, they wanted to know their Creator, they wanted to talk with God. You can do those right now and yet we don’t celebrate like David did. Don’t ever, take the fact that you can meet with God for granted.
- Do you feel like you have joy in the fact that you can know God and talk to Him everyday?
- Would you celebrate if you had never talked with God and then suddenly you had the ability to do so?
- When was the last time, if ever, you danced or moved because of something God did or spoke to you?
